The school youth as owner of the Hohle Gasse

Content introduction

The Hohle Gasse is an important historical memorial site. It connects Küssnacht with Immensee and was originally part of the historic trade route from north to south, from Zurich to the Gotthard. In the 1930s, the volume of traffic became unbearable.

Die Schweizer Schuljugend machte mit einem Postkartenverkauf auf den Missstand aufmerksam und legte den Grundstein für eine Umfahrung. With this commitment, the Swiss School Youth also became the owner of the historic site. Today, the Hohle Gasse is not only a place of power in the mythological history of the founding of the Confederation, but also an attractive place for culturally and historically interested visitors thanks to its information pavilion and rest area. It provides easily accessible and impressive information about the history and stories surrounding William Tell and the Hohle Gasse.

What is the goal?

The legend of the freedom hero Tell and his quest for independence has shaped the development of Switzerland. In the Hohle Gasse, the pupils set off in search of clues. They encounter the myth of Tell, examine his role in history and learn about his significance in literature and music. Where does the story end and the legend begin?

How is history made?

The past is over. We can’t simply travel back in time and find out exactly what it was like in the past. But every era leaves traces, for example pictures, texts or objects. As these traces come directly from the past, they are referred to as sources (Q). But when we watch a historical film or read a comic, for example, these tell us something about the past. The film or comic is therefore a representation (D). Sources and illustrations help to answer our questions about the past. Then history is created. This is science. Sometimes legends or invented stories are mixed in. Then we are talking about stories.

Using the Tell Chapel in Hohle Gasse as an example, four steps show how one can proceed when dealing with the past.
